The Shifting Stereotypes digital pile sort activity is based on the live exploratory study we conducted during the Shifting Stereotypes installations. It is designed to explore how participants think about stereotypes and stereotyping language. As part of this project, we are hoping to generate conversations around why people think and speak in certain ways, and how we explain our reasoning behind these words and actions. We collect the data from this activity to inform the ongoing and processual nature of this project, breaking down the barriers between data collection and dissemination, and the researcher and the researched. We do not have a specific analysis goal, however, we welcome all discussions about how participating in the pile sort can expand our collective body of knowledge around stereotypes and beyond.

Instructions

Place cards into a piles together with those they "go with." There is no right or wrong way to sort the cards, but you should consider your decision-making process and the reasons for those decisions -- you will be asked to briefly explain after sorting.

Click "Add a pile" for each pile you would like to create. Keep in mind you need to have at least two piles. There is no limit to the number of piles you can create as long as there are at least two cards per pile.
Drag each card in the Unsorted pile onto a pile you have created. If you come up with a new idea for a pile, feel free to keep adding or removing piles until the sort feels accurate to you.
Do not leave any cards in the "unsorted" pile.
